Who says software is ever finished?
This revision of the TRX-2 firmware improves the way the selective VFO Memory Lock function operates.

The VFOs of the TRX-2 can operate in one of two modes, the default used by most people, A/B+Split Mode, and the Multi-VFO/Memory Mode.

In the A/B+Split mode there are two active VFOs, A and B, either of which can be used as the Tx/Rx VFO. By briefly repeatedly pressing the VFO/A=B button you can cycle through VFO-A, VFO-B, Split and then back to VFO-A. In the Split mode VFO-A is the Rx VFO, VFO-B the Tx VFO and the frequencies are usually different. This split-frequency operation is often used when chasing rare DXPeditions, or in contests.

In the Multi-VFO/Memory mode you can set the number of active VFOs from 3 to 26. If you use less than 26 then the remainder are passive, or memories. An active VFO can be selected as the main VFO and its frequency changed with the VFO knob. A passive VFO memory can only have its frequency changed using the VFO Copy function which can transfer the contents of any active or passive VFO to any other VFO.

Several firmware revisions ago the selective lock feature was added whereby any active VFO can be locked to prevent its frequency from being changed. By modifying the VFO memory configuration you could then ensure that this VFO was configured as a passive VFO thus protecting the contents against any accidental over-write. This was intended to allow you to save special or favourite frequencies, for example, of SW broadcast stations.

Unfortunately this operation did require a fair amount of button pushing, largely because there are only a few buttons on the front panel, and they all have second functions assigned to them. This version of the firmware now allows you an easy way to toggle the lock status of any VFO or VFO memory in either VFO operating mode.

If the second function mode has been set to Press & Hold in the System Calibration & Setup menu, then proceed thus:

In the A/B/+Split VFO mode, select the Split mode, and press and hold the VFO/A=B button. When the second function timer expires after 650mS, the top line of the display will change and show the message 'Toggle VFO Lock'. Rotate the VFO knob to select the desired VFO or memory location, and toggle the lock status by briefly pressing the PWR button. Rotate the VFO knob to select another VFO or memory and repeat as required. To exit, release the VFO/A=B button.

In the Multi-VFO/Memory mode, to select an active VFO, press and hold the VFO/A=B button. When the second function timer expires, the top line of the display will show the message 'Select VFO'. Rotate the VFO knob to select any active VFO, then release the VFO/A=B button and toggle the lock status with a brief press of the PWR button.

To toggle the lock status of a VFO memory, press and hold the VFO/A=B button and when the second function timer expires, rotate the VFO knob past the maximum active VFO whereupon the top line will change and the message 'Toggle VFO Lock' will be displayed showing that you are now changing the lock status of a VFO memory. Select the desired memory, and toggle the lock status with a brief press of the PWR button. To exit, rotate the VFO knob anti-clockwise to select the desired active VFO, and then release the VFO/A=B button.

If the second function mode has been set to Latched, then the operation is essentially the same except that when pressing and holding the VFO/A=B button after the second function timer has expired and the prompts displayed you will now hear a soft repetitive beep to alert you that the function is latched and you can release the VFO/A=B button. To exit from the latched mode, briefly press the VFO/A=B button.

This is fully covered in Annex M of the User Manual, contained in the ZIP archive. This firmware version can be safely loaded over an existing 1.09 version or higher, but, as with all firmware updates, it is a wise precaution to make a note of at least your current calibration settings and preferably your User Configuration settings as well, prior to performing the update. If you are updating from an earlier version or from the original, then you will receive a 'Checksum Error!' message on initial start-up and the default settings will be loaded. You will then have to re-calibrate as the measurement system is significantly different from the original. This error message only occurs the first time.
